FDA CDRH Team Retreat

January 31, 2019

I’m proud to work with those who help make drugs safe for “we the people” at this private event for 25 employees.

Smart, Savvy Change happens when we learn to Think Critically.  This custom workshop will feature:

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: THE FOUNDATION FOR BUILDING TRUST

  • Sender Receiver Model – to ensure team members are sending the right message and signals. Think about a situation in the work place where someone signaled it was unsafe to work cooperatively. What was the signal? How did you react? What was the outcome?
  • Interpreting the Message – are we interpreting the message based on facts or on judgments, biases, and assumptions? Misunderstood messages are the cause of a lot of chaos, confusion, and inefficiency in the workplace. Sand in the Machine – an exercise that helps participants understand biases, assumptions, and how we communicate them.
  • Crafting Message – sending a message that resonates with others is essential for building relationships based on trust. Understanding your DiSC style and the impact it has on those we interact with at work (we’ll do a simple self-sorting exercise to get them into their self-identified groups). Team members will practice crafting a message that resonates with their opposite style.

EFFECTIVE FEEDBACK: THE BASICS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Giving & Receiving Feedback – Team members will be provided with a simple Crucial Conversation skill for opening dialogue and giving effective feedback. They will practice using the model to give and receive both positive and negative feedback. Share with each other what strength you bring to the team and what strength you think your partner brings. What would you like for your teammate to do differently?

TENT POLE EXPERIENCE – a simple task; not simple to execute. Demonstrates the importance of teamwork and effective communication.
